Female Owned Recording Studios

Alicia Keys studio The Oven

Unfortunately there are not that many.  Alicia Keys opened a studio, we mentioned it earlier on this blog.  Jamille Luney has her own recording studio.  However, it’s in her house and not open to the public.  Missy Elliot does not have a public studio either.  The only female producer who owns a studio open to the public appears to be Ms. Keys.  Her studio is called The Oven Studios and is located in New York.  In addition Alicia Keys has a female engineer.  HELL YES!!  Her name is Ann Mincieli.  Keys is part owner of the studio with partner Kerry “Krucial“ Brothers

Is Keyshia Cole a Producer?

Keyshia Cole

This is a really good question.  There are couple of unconfirmed Internet sources that list Keyshia Cole as a producer.  If she is, I’m all for it.  I’m a huge Keyshia Cole fan.  She’s totally raw and she sings from her heart.  Her energy is natural and pure, reminiscent of Lauryn Hill.  Don’t get me wrong the styles are completely different.  However, music listeners have not experienced any pure raw energy since L-boogie (with the exception of Fantasia).  Beyonce was raw when she first came out.  When she first performed Dangerously In Love, everybody had their mouth open.  She was INCREDIBLE.  Now, she is too rehearsed.  If Keyshia Cole is producing, I hope her production is as sincere as her voice.

Will Ciara and Beyonce Be Remaking Aaliyah Songs?

Beyonce Aaliyah

Some of the radio stations have been spouting off this rumor. If it’s true, this could be more devastating than Kirk Franklin’s remake of Earth Wind and Fire’s hit song September. That had to be a sin Kirk, nobody would remake an Earth Wind and Fire song, not even Jesus himself.  On that same note, Ciara and Beyonce have no business remaking an Aahliyah song.  HOWEVER,  it is a good marketing move.

I was listening to One and a Million yesterday. Many people think Ciara is similar to the late great Aaliyah.  No!  Ciara’s vocal performance cannot even touch Aaliyah’s!  A lot of people THINK Aahliyah did not have a strong voice, but that is NOT true. One of my friends has access to some of the original vocal tracks of Aaliyah (no music). Her voice was amazing and unusual. She could really sing. Ciara CANNOT. Here’s how you can tell. If you listen to old Aaliyah songs, you can hear on the leads (the verse) her voice is only recorded once. Why? Aahliyah’s voice was strong and solid. Beyonce only records her leads (the verse) once;  Her voice is strong and solid as well.  Both Beyonce and Aaliyah did/do not need to backup their leads. Ciara DOES! Her voice is dubbed and tripled on the lead.  I know some of you are shaking your head and saying ‘ I’ve heard Beyonce and Aaliyah songs and they sound doubled sometimes too!’  Yeah they are doubled on the BACKGROUNDS AND THE HOOK, where they are supposed to be.  On the leads (verses), a true vocalist should be able to carry him or herself without any help.  Hell, they should be able to sing even if that background music stops (i.e Ashlee Simpson).  Bottom line, Ciara is a great dancer but she is not a strong singer. Both Beyonce and Aaliyah are/were great singers and dancers.

I don’t want to see anybody remake an Aaliyah song. However, some radio stations are saying Beyonce will remake One in a Million and Ciara will record a Duet with Aaliyah using unreleased vocal recordings (like Biggie and 2pac). I’m more inclined to listen to Beyonce’s version than Ciara’s. I don’t think Ciara has earned the status yet to remake an Aaliyah song, let alone do a duet with her. Beyonce, on the other hand, has. I would be even more inclined to listen to Beyonce’s version if she used the track Jamille produced in honor of Aaliyah. The track is truly reminiscent of One in a Million and Beyonce’s vocals would sound perfect on top of it. However, since Beyonce is a producer now -a- days, she may take a stab at producing it herself. We’ll have to wait and see =)

Cost of Production Male Vs. Female Producer

a female music producer

Both women and men are intelligent beings. Some are more intelligent than others. As you can tell by my name, Charlene, I am a woman. I’m a big advocate for female music producers. It breaks my heart there are not more in the commercial entertainment industry. However, I’m disappointed in a lot of my fellow female producers. Why? Many female producers have not capitalized on the befits of sexism and technology. I know, you’re thinking what could possibly be a benefit of sexism? Sexism causes lower wages for females, but spells CHEAPER PRODUCTION COSTS to labels! In this period of economic crisis and massive downloading, you will see a lot more underground and female producers emerge.

Right now Missy Elliot is the leading female music producer in the commercial entertainment industry and she is averaging some where around $30,000-$50,000 a track (give or take). Missy’s price is not bad. In fact she is much more affordable than Scott Storch or Timbaland who make around $80,000 – $100,000 per track. Missy is just as qualified and talented as any of these male producers. However, she’s getting paid half has much (the pitfall of sexism). It’s still a nice pay rate; I’d love to have it. More importantly as labels continue to downsize Missy becomes the more viable option when hiring a big name producer. We already discussed the unresolved continuing problem of downloading that is bankrupting the music industry as we speak. However, lets also discuss having to pay producers $80,000-$100,000 per track on top of other production costs to make an album. The economy is bad, price of gas is through the roof, cost of education is ridiculous, mom and dad are cutting little Tommy and Mary’s allowance because they need to save money, so what do little Tommy and Mary do to entertain themselves since they can’t go anywhere or leave the house? Watch MTV, BET, hop on MySpace, Face Book, You Tube, Instant Messenger, and DOWNLOAD!! Mom and dad are not going to take them to the store; the price of gas it too high and they do not want to spend money.

Missy Elliot’s pay rate will prove to be a blessing in her career during this time of economic crisis, but the female producers who will really benefit from this are independents such as Jamille Luney. Jamille’s going rate is between $5,000-$10,000 per track and she already has a following (without major marketing). Labels save loads of money using a producer like Jamille and they are not sacrificing production (go listen to the track she did for the Nas and Alicia Keys remix http://myspace.com/jamilleluney). Many record labels are turning to the streets for inexpensive well produced beats.

Before Kanye West was a household name, he produced tracks for Rock- A -Fella records for Jamille’s current pay rate. The bottom line is a lot of talented female producers are going to get a shot and I think Jamille Luney is leading the pack in 2008. Missy will still reign as the queen. It would be nice to see Missy take Jamille under her wing. I think Elliot and Luney should team up before the industry tries to turn them against each other to create a girl cat fight for promotion. The Kanye 50 cent dog fight was not that exciting, but two females is a male centered society’s dream!

Female Producers and Studio Equipment

Which female producers use an SSL console? When Alicia Keys and Kerry “Krucial” Brothers opened the The Oven Studios, they opted for the SSL AWS900 at the advice of longtime engineer Ann Mincieli. Yes a female engineer, we’re excited. Mincieli first hooked up with Keys and Brothers while recording The Diary of Alicia Keys album at Quad Studios in 2000. We’ll cover more on Mincieli in another post. The bottom line is Ms. Keys uses an SSL console.

Missy Elliot has a Duality SSL console and we know Beyonce records on SSL consoles as well. Dangerously in Love was recorded at the Hit Factory, Studio 3, which has an SSL XL 9000 K Series console. By know some of you are saying DAMN, I can’t afford an SSL. Who can? Do you have to have an SSL to make a good recording? HELL NO! Beyonce Knowles finished recording her second album, B’Day, in Aspen at Great Divide Studios. Great Divide Studios uses a 32-fader Icon D-Control (pictured below).

Great Divide Studios Mix Magazine

This is NOT AN SSL console. Its still expensive, but definitely not an SSL. This brings us to our next question. Do we have to have an expensive console to produce a professional sound? HELL NO! The hit song Soldier Boy was created in a home studio with no console (again I’m not a fan). Jay Z has purchased many tracks from producers who use Fruity Loops and no console. AJ Gaines produced/produces tracks for young Jeezy using Fruity Loops and again no console. Jamille ‘the female Timbaland’ Luney created the Nas and Alicia Keys remix tracks in Propellerhead’s Reason without a console. Ryan Leslie did Cassie’s track for the hit song Me and You with the Digi 002 rack, no console. Kanye West does not even use a computer when making his tracks let alone a console. He uses the MPC, keyboards, and other hardware. Once he’s done and its time to mix and record, he dumps the tracks into a computer some where and lets and engineer mix them. The engineer may or may not use a console.

I know right now your mind is blown and your totally confused. You’re probably saying, ‘I know I heard some real instruments in some of those tracks!’ You’re damn right you did. We know from interviews that Jamille records live instruments in Steinberg’s Nuendo, picks the parts she likes and slices them up in Steinberg’s WaveLab, and imports the sound slices into Reason. Other producers use the same method as well. Bottom line, there is no right and wrong. There is only legal, illegal, bad, good, and HOT! Whatever studio equipment you have, make the track HOT!

Women and Technology

The technological evolution has truly hit the music industry hard. Record executives never dreamed that a young college student would create a program called Napster years ago. They also thought the shutting down of Napster and serious law suits would stop downloading. They truly under estimated the intelligence of music listeners across the globe. In their ignorance and arrogance they are paying a dear price. However, independent artists should thank them. They have opened the door and leveled the playing ground for real talent.

If and independent artist can make a truly ear catching song and promote themselves successfully via Internet (save over head costs), they have a shot. Take for example the hit song ‘Soldier Boy’. Although I am not a fan, the fifteen year old rapper/producer created the song in his home studio and posted it on MySpace, Face Book, You Tube, and SoundClick. The rest is history. Technology has truly changed the game and given the underdog a shot. People must learn how to take advantage of these opportunities.  One hint is do not attempt what has already been done. You must find the next new method and be the first.

The window of opportunity has also opened for female producers everywhere. With technology changing marketing strategies, female producers no longer have to adhere to the standards of the male dominated industry. No longer to they have to go through male dominated management companies, A&R’s, record executives. Alicia Keys had to wait for about six years before Arista put her on the shelf. It worked, Clive Davis is a genius, but still the upcoming female producers have other options.

Alicia Keys

A prime example of this new generation of technology Internet based female producers is Jamille Luney. Her name is growing in popularity across the globe. Through word of mouth she has landed remix opportunities with Nas and Alicia Keys. I’m sure Ms. Keys probably gave Ms. Luney some advice, female producer to female producer. However, Jamille has an advantage Ms. Keys does not. In addition to having to parents as lawyers, Ms. Luney is not constrained by the normal precepts of the music industry. She was not sculpted or created by a corporate record label or artists development team. That being said, she has a lot of creative freedom and is not held captive by ‘work for fire’ clauses or terms and conditions of recording contracts. However, she does suffer from one disadvantage. Her fan base and popularity is solely at this time determined by the music listeners and the public. Alicia Keys is in the music network, so they will opt to promote her first. Nobody wants to offend record industry giant Clive Davis. So you better play Alicia before Jamille.

Jamille Luney

This won’t last for long. Clive is suffering along with the rest of the music industry. He recently had to let go of Taylor Hicks, Ruben Studdard, and their discussing terminating Fantasia’s contract as well. Sales are down, what else can he do. He has to turn to more popular acts like Alicia, Justin, and Outcast that can produce. BUT IT DOES NOT STOP THE DOWNLOADING! Young kids all want ipods, they live on their computers, cell phones, and to make matters worse, all cell phones will come with mp3 players within the next five years.

Big industry names may get more airplay and mass marketing. However, their popularity puts them at the top of the list for being downloaded illegally. ” I like that new Alicia Keys song ‘No One’. I’m gonna download it for free!” This happens everyday. “I like that ‘No One’ Remix by that new producer Jamille Luney. The only place I can find it is on her website though. Guess I’ll have to buy it. That’s okay $.99 isn’t bad. I don’t feel like calling my friends to see if one of them has it and I don’t feel like waiting for them to email or instant message it to me. I’ve gotta get to Amy’s sweet 16 party!”

Cell Phone with Mp3

The above statement is an over exaggerated example and Jamille’s remix is not for resale, but that is the mindset of these young children. It’s hard for us to imagine. We did not grow up with Internet and computers in almost every household. However, today’s children are tomorrow’s consumers. They want things fast and quick. Since they can access everything with a few key strokes on a computer, patience has gone out the window. They’re not going to waste time trying to get a ride to a CD store to buy Alicia Keys, they’re going to download her. They’re not going to waste time trying to find Jamille’s songs for free or wait for their friends to send a copy. They’ll pay the $.99, they may even shell out $1.00 if the song is really hot!

Left Eye Was More Than A Member of TLC…

Lisa Left Eye Lopes

She was a hell of a producer.  Many people may not know or remember that. However, towards the end of Left Eye’s career, she was getting more into producing.  Remember the hit song ‘Heart Break Hotel’ featuring Kelly Price, Faith Evans, and Whitney Houston (before you know)?  Yeah, that was your girl Left Eye.  In fact she claimed she originally pitched the idea to her group members of TLC, but Chili and T-Boz were not feeling it.

Left Eye’s Producer resume also includes the girl group Blaque.  If you can’t remember them, they were the three young girls who sang ’808′ and ’Bring It All To Me’ featuring N’Sync.  The group also made their first on screen appearance in the movie Bring It On and had a couple tracks on the soundtrack.  Left Eye’s production company was named Left Eye Productions.  Blaque was one of the acts she discovered under her production company.

We often remember Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes as the rapper in TLC, but she was a hell of a producer.  Rest in Peace.

All Hail The Queen

Queen Latifah

Queen Latifah has done just about everything there is to do in the entertainment industry.  We wonder if she will dabble in music production some more.  She has produced in the past, both herself and other artists.  However, I would not be surprised if Queen starts producing more music, particularly for her own soundtracks.

The Queen is concentatring  on her production company (film).  So any music she produces will probably be for her own movie unless somebody can persuade her.  I respect the Queen on this, its a good business move.  Why? The record industry is tanking.  Yeah, you see parties on TV and music awards, but you also see President Bush on TV saying there are weapons of mass destruction and this war has nothing to do with oil.  Yeah right!  You can’t stop people from downloading free music, especially after record industries have jacked up prices for so long.  How can you explain that the cost of everything (gas, food, clothing, houses, education, health care, etc…) has gone up but CD prices have gone down?  Hmm…. because the boys got greedy and selfish and now its come back to haunt them.  Same thing with Bush, this war has come back to haunt him and all the Americans who participated.

The Queen never got involved in all the dirt, and as a result she’s abundantly blessed.  She’s a music producer, but above all she’s a success.  Don’t count out the Queen to produce some new tracks for people in her free time.  However, don’t bet on it either.

2008 Female Music Producer Predictions

 Missye Elliot

Missy Elliot

Missy Elliot will continue to reign as the leading female producer. However, competition will arise and a new leader shall emerge. She won’t take over. I don’t think it will be Alicia Keys as many suspect. In fact until I can see evidence that Alicia Keys knows how to operate a control surface or MIDI interface, I’m still not giving her the status of ‘produer’ just yet. I’ll give her ‘great songwriter’ and ‘decent vocalist’.

Jamille Luney

Jamille Luney

Jamille Luney is the name for 2008. She’s all over the place. She recently did a remix with Nas and Alicia Keys. Track was banannas! She had some crazy Timbaland like stab sounds (the kind in Justin Timbalake’s ‘My Love’) mixed in with strings and other mysterious sounds I could not identify. Jamille’s track featuring Nas and Alicia Keys can be found on her MySpace page htt://myspace.com/jamilleluney .  Also, the fact that she is extremely attractive will not hurt her career in this male dominated industry. Yes, it has nothing to do with her production skills, which are superb, but all I’m saying is it won’t hurt.

Lauryn Hill aka L-Boogie

Lauryn Hill

Other names to consider include Lauryn Hill. You may argue wouldn’t Lauryn step up to the plate for Jamille?  She’s got more experience and she’s a vet in the industry. True, but rumor has it Lauryn is difficult to work with, hence, her little melt down and disappearance from the industry. In fairness to Ms. Hill, having your man cheat on you, raising two kids on your own, and beef with former group members is a big stress factor. Jamille has the upper hand in that she does not have all this baggage and she has no children. However, Lauryn has the voice and the fan base so anything is possible.  This article may fire her up so Jamille be on your P’s and Q’s.

Beyonce appears to be producing as well, or at least that is what the credits on the back of the Bday album say.  She and her father, Matthew Knowles, are credited as being the executive prodcucers of her current album.  Again, if she can tell me where the MIDI hookups are and how to load the drivers, I’ll give her the title as ‘producer’.  For now, I still refer to Beyonce as the ’supreme vocalist’ (no put intended to Diana Ross and the Dream Girls persona) and ’supreme female entertainer’.

2008 will be an interesting year for Female Prodcuers but my prediction is look for Jamille Luney to break in, Missy to continue to reign, Alicia Keys and Beyonce to produce more of their own albums, and Lauryn Hill to pump out a few hits.
